Today the Trump administration formally announced its decision to rescind the DACA program within the next six months. Doing so immediately affects the lives nearly of nearly 800,000 people. Pilsen Neighbors Community Council/Gamaliel of Metro Chicago oppose this decision as it is morally wrong to separate families and prevent opportunities for anyone in this country.
Removing the 800,000 DACA recipients from our workforce in a single day will cost $200 billion in lost GDP and $60 billion in lost tax revenue over a decade, and disrupts multi-billion dollar industries like healthcare, technology, and finance, according to the CATO Institute.
DACA recipients contribute an estimated $2 billion a year in state and local taxes, and are projected to contribute an additional $505 million if they are provided with an opportunity to earn citizenship through the DREAM Act, according to the Institute of Taxation and Economic Policy
We are calling on Congress to make the DREAM Act (S. 1615) an immediate legislative priority. The DREAM Act, would allow current DACA recipients and others who may be DACA eligible to remain in the country immediately while also providing an eventual pathway to citizenship.
Pilsen Neighbors Community Council/Gamaliel of Metro Chicago consists of members in the community. We do not stand along with the ideals and values which the current administration represents. We are an organization for the people, made by the people and that will always be in our core values.
