Over 400 hundred parents attended the 6th Annual Pilsen Education Summit at Benito Juarez Community Academy. This year’s theme, “Studying, Working and Living in a Bilingual Community”  was reflected in the workshops such as, “The Importance of a Positive Cultural Identity,” “More is Better: Breaking the Stereotypes about Bilingualism,” “Education in Two Languages,” and many more.

The panel discussion, “Being Bilingual: School Perspectives” (Ser Bilingüe: Perspectivas Escolares) featured the expertise of Dr. Sonia Soltero, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Leadership, Language and Curriculum in the College of Education at DePaul University. The panel was enriched with the perspectives of a teacher, a parent and a student who highlighted successful models and experiences in bilingual education. In this panel, the audience will also get an opportunity to ask questions of the panelists and enrich the discussion even more so.

Additional workshops dealt with preventing “bullying” in the community, mental health issues in the Latino community, supporting early childhood education in Illinois and many moreWatch the video clips here

The Education Summit was featured in Medill Reports, and Univison Chicago News on Nov. 3 with over 1.5 million viewers.
