On the eve of December 19, an 84-year-old water main burst in Pilsen, flooding streets with several inches of water and rerouting traffic for several hours. The break happened on the grounds of Benito Juarez Community Academy, 2150 S. Laflin, at 8:30 p.m — across the street from the Pilsen Neighbors/Gamaliel of Metro Chicago office. As a result, our office was flooded and we lost furniture, archives, Fiesta del Sol memorabilia, and much more. We had a foot and a half of water that flooded the basement. Our bolier and furnace were also lost.
You can also help, by volunteering or making a generous contribution to our organization, to help cover some of the damages. Your donation will go a long way.
The flood damaged many organizational archives, photos, Fiesta del Sol posters, furniture, furnace, boiler, carpet and walls. We lost, and are in need of the following:
-Boiler
-Carpet
-Sump pump
-Furniture: tables, chairs, & book cases
-Fiesta del Sol posters and T-shirts (Priceless)
-Organizational archives, photos (Priceless)
-Wall repair with insulation
-Mold wall repair
-Furnace
In the midst of a tragedy, a visit and a helping hand is what’s needed. By noon on Tuesday, we had complete strangers with no organizational involvement or ties — roll up their sleeves, put on their rain boots and help with clean up. We are grateful to them.
